Alligator Gar (Atractosteus spatula) are the star of the show on the Trinity River, and for good reason. These living fossils have been swimming in our waters for millions of years, virtually unchanged. They can grow to massive sizes, with some specimens pushing 8 feet in length and tipping the scales at over 300 pounds. Alligator Gar are ambush predators, using their impressive rows of teeth to snag prey as it swims by. They're most active in the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, when the water temperatures rise and their metabolism kicks into high gear.
What makes Alligator Gar such a prized catch isn't just their size – it's their fight. When hooked, these fish are known for explosive runs and acrobatic jumps that'll test your skills and your gear. They're also incredibly resilient, able to breathe air through a specialized swim bladder, which means they can put up a marathon battle even in low-oxygen conditions.
Fishing for Alligator Gar is as much about the experience as it is about the catch. These fish are a window into prehistoric times, and landing one is like touching a piece of living history. Plus, the sheer size and prehistoric appearance of a big gar make for some of the most impressive fishing photos you'll ever take. Just imagine holding up a fish with a snout full of needle-sharp teeth that's as long as you are tall – that's the kind of memory that sticks with you.
While Alligator Gar can be caught year-round on the Trinity, the prime time for trophy hunting is typically from May through September. This is when water temperatures are ideal and the gar are most active, often seen rolling on the surface. During the hottest part of summer, early mornings and late evenings can be particularly productive as the fish move into shallower water to feed.
Spring can also offer exciting opportunities, especially if there's high water. Gar will often move into flooded areas to spawn, presenting a unique chance to sight-fish for these giants in relatively shallow water. Fall can be hit or miss, but as the water cools, you might catch the gar feeding heavily before the winter slowdown.
For the die-hard anglers, winter fishing for Alligator Gar can be rewarding too. The fish tend to congregate in deeper holes during the colder months, and while they may be less active, the chances of hooking into a true monster improve as the bigger fish become more predictable in their winter haunts.
It's worth noting that Alligator Gar are a species of special concern. These fish grow slowly and can live for decades, which means their populations are sensitive to overfishing. That's why we practice and encourage catch-and-release for these magnificent creatures. We'll show you how to handle and release your catch safely, ensuring that future generations of anglers will have the chance to experience the thrill of hooking into one of these river giants.
Taking pictures is absolutely encouraged – these are fish you'll want to brag about – but we use special techniques to support the gar's body and get you back in the water quickly. It's all about respect for the fish and the ecosystem they're a part of. Plus, releasing a big gar is almost as exciting as catching it. There's something special about watching a fish that could be older than you swim away strong, knowing it'll be out there growing even bigger for the next angler lucky enough to hook it.
While we provide all the necessary equipment, it's good to know what you're in for. We use heavy-duty rods and reels spooled with braided line that can handle the weight and fight of these prehistoric powerhouses. The terminal tackle often includes steel leaders – those teeth are no joke – and large, durable hooks. Bait can vary, but we often use cut bait or live bait like shad or carp, which mimic the gar's natural prey.
Don't forget to bring sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The Texas sun can be brutal, especially when it's reflecting off the water. A light, long-sleeved shirt can be a lifesaver. And while we'll have water on board, it's always a good idea to bring extra to stay hydrated during a full day on the river.
A day on the Trinity isn't just about the fish – it's a full-on nature experience. The river is teeming with wildlife, and you're likely to spot everything from turtles sunning themselves on logs to ospreys diving for their lunch. If we're lucky, we might even see a bald eagle soaring overhead. The Trinity River ecosystem is a complex web of life, and your guide will be happy to share knowledge about the flora and fauna that call this waterway home.
Between casts, you'll get to soak in the scenery and maybe hear a story or two about the river's history. The Trinity has been a lifeline for Texas for centuries, and its banks hold tales of steamboats, outlaws, and the growth of the Lone Star State. It's not just a fishing trip – it's a floating history lesson and nature tour rolled into one.
If you're itching to test your skills against one of the most impressive freshwater fish out there, our Trinity River Alligator Gar trip is calling your name. Whether you're looking to break your personal best or just want to experience the thrill of battling a true river monster, this is the adventure for you. Our expert guides, top-notch gear, and intimate knowledge of the Trinity's waters give you the best shot at hooking into the fish of a lifetime.
Remember, we're limited to three anglers per trip, so don't wait to lock in your date. That non-refundable deposit isn't just securing your spot – it's your ticket to an unforgettable day on the water chasing living dinosaurs. Grab your fishing buddies, mark your calendar, and get ready for a Trinity River experience that'll have you telling fish tales for years to come. Something g that I’ve been wanting to do since I was a kid was fish for an alligator gar ... when I found myself in Texas with my fiancé, I knew this was the time to do it. When I first spoke with Milton months prior ... I knew I was in for a good time! Despite astronomical flood conditions on the Trinity River ... Milton was able to navigate it all safely and get us on the fish. I was so happy to beat my PB with my 7 foot gar and my fiancé reeling in her own 6 foot monster. Don’t settle for any guide ... Go for the one who can handle any conditions 🔥

We had one of the best experiences ever on a guided trip. Two PBs were broken with a 45 pounder (previously 35) for Kevin and a 35 pounder (previously 30) for Oli. Nacho caught a 38 pounder for his biggest of the day. Manny definitely knew what he was doing and was very knowledgeable. Don't miss out, book today!

Alligator Gar are the beasts of the Trinity River. These prehistoric-looking fish can grow over 6 feet long and weigh 100+ pounds. They're not aggressive, but they put up one heck of a fight when hooked. You'll find 'em in deep river bends and slow-moving pools, especially during hot, dry summer months. Gar can actually breathe air, so they'll often surface – that's when we strike. We use big, oily baitfish like carp or shad on a heavy-duty setup. One local trick: bright-colored bobbers help track your bait in murky water. Gator Gar fishing isn't about numbers; it's about the thrill of battling a living fossil. Just remember, it's catch-and-release only for these giants. Whether you're after a trophy photo or just want to test your skills against one of North America's largest freshwater fish, Alligator Gar offer an experience you won't forget.
